The Akwa Ibom State Government has dismissed claims made by Mr Mojeed Misikilu of the International Press Institute in Nigeria. The Editor in Chief of Premium Times had accused the State of suppressing press freedom and blacklisting Governor Umo Eno. In a statement issued on Monday, the Government described the allegations as baseless and inconsistent with the State’s established relationship with journalists and media organisations.

The Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, challenged the International Press Institute to present any verified case of a journalist in the State who has been arrested, detained, intimidated, or restricted by the current administration. He also asked for evidence of any media organisation that has been shut down or prevented from operating. According to him, no such incident has occurred since Governor Eno assumed office.

Mr Umanah stressed that the Governor has consistently demonstrated a friendly and tolerant approach towards the media. He noted that the administration has not taken action against any journalist, even when inaccurate reports have been published. Several professional bodies, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the Nigerian Guild of Editors, have recognised Governor Eno for his openness to the press.

Government officials stated that media organisations in Akwa Ibom have full access to cover official activities and public engagements. They also clarified recent concerns regarding the recall of a Channels Television correspondent and a camera operator. The Commissioner emphasised that their reassignment followed routine administrative procedures and did not amount to censorship or harassment.

The Government highlighted its support to the media sector, citing the donation of new vehicles to the leadership of the NUJ in the State and the completion of the Union’s auditorium. The commissioning of the facility was attended by the National President of the NUJ. It was further revealed that 356 communication professionals currently serve in various government agencies, which was described as the highest number of media appointments by any State Government in the country.

Mr Umanah expressed disappointment that such accusations were made without proper inquiry or consultation with key stakeholders. He described the claims as unfair to an administration known for its inclusive approach to public communication.

The Government has requested that Mr Misikilu withdraw his statement and issue a public apology. It also called on the International Press Institute to distance itself from what it described as a personal and misleading assertion.

The State Government reiterated its commitment to the protection of press freedom and to continued partnership with journalists for the proper dissemination of public information. Members of the public were urged to disregard the report, which the Government said does not reflect the current situation in Akwa Ibom.
