Uyo — In a decisive step towards redefining the urban landscape of Akwa Ibom State, Governor Umo Eno is embarking on a far reaching urban renewal project along Uyo Village Road, anchored on the reclamation of the former Uyo Village dump site and gully. The initiative forms part of the administration’s broader strategy to address infrastructure deficits, expand housing availability, and reposition Uyo as a modern and competitive state capital.

During a physical inspection of the project site, Governor Eno described the initiative as a deliberate attempt to convert a long neglected environmental liability into a productive urban asset. According to him, what once stood as an expansive wasteland is now being reimagined as an emerging new city, comparable to urban developments in more advanced jurisdictions.

A Vision Rooted in Reclamation and Sustainability

The project, which commenced early last year, involves the reclamation of over 100 hectares of land previously written off due to severe erosion and prolonged use as a dump site. Governor Eno explained that with foresight, planning, and intentional execution, the gully would be permanently reclaimed and repurposed for high value development.

To ensure the sustainability of the project, construction firms Amitec and Bulletin have been mandated to implement comprehensive water channeling systems designed to permanently resolve erosion challenges in the area. The Governor stressed that addressing the environmental root causes was critical to the long term success of the development.

Housing, Innovation, and the Creative Village Concept

At the core of the urban renewal project are several flagship developments aimed at meeting pressing social and economic needs. These include a 150 unit middle class housing estate designed to help reduce the state’s housing deficit, as well as the development of a new Government Residential Area to further decongest existing neighbourhoods.

Another key feature of the project is the proposed Creative Village, a dedicated hub intended to nurture innovation, creativity, and artistic expression among young people. The facility is expected to serve as a catalyst for skills development, entrepreneurship, and cultural enterprise within the state.

Access to the reclaimed area will be provided through a spur from Uyo Village Road, ensuring seamless integration of the new development into the existing city structure and improving overall urban connectivity.

Deliberate and Intentional Urban Growth

Governor Eno emphasised that the transformation of Uyo into a modern city is not accidental but the result of careful planning and incremental execution. He noted that sustainable urban development requires audacity, vision, and a willingness to reclaim public assets for the collective good rather than allowing them to remain in decay.

According to the Governor, each phase of the project represents a building block towards a more functional, inclusive, and resilient capital city.

Unlocking Economic Opportunities for Youth

Beyond infrastructure, the Governor highlighted the project’s potential as a major driver of employment and economic inclusion. He urged the youth of Akwa Ibom to seize the opportunities presented by the ongoing construction activities and the future Creative Village.

Drawing inspiration from the industrious spirit of the state’s forebears, Governor Eno encouraged young people to demonstrate diligence, creativity, and ownership in contributing to the growth and sustainability of the emerging city.

He concluded the inspection by charging contractors to sustain the current pace of work, noting that the administration does not have the luxury of time in its commitment to delivering quality housing, infrastructure, and economic opportunities for the people of Akwa Ibom State.
