Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has disclosed that his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was the outcome of a carefully planned, six-month consultation process.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Channels Television, Governor Eno explained that his decision was rooted in pragmatic political reasoning — particularly the need to ensure his state was not isolated from the centre of power. He noted that Akwa Ibom currently has a prominent representative in national politics — Senate President Godswill Akpabio — who is a key member of the ruling APC.

“It makes little political sense for Akwa Ibom to remain in opposition when the Senate President is from our state but belongs to another party,” Eno said. “This alignment creates more opportunities to address our people’s needs.”

The governor applauded President Bola Tinubu’s reform policies, especially economic measures aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s economy. According to him, these reforms have yielded tangible benefits for Akwa Ibom, enabling the state government to fund critical development projects.

Governor Eno insisted that his defection was not an impulsive move but rather a strategic choice to secure greater federal support and unlock opportunities for his state’s growth.

“If leadership is working in the interest of the people, it should be supported; when it is falling short, we should speak up. At this moment, there is progress, and we must build on it,” he remarked.

The governor expressed confidence that closer alignment with the ruling party would fast-track the delivery of infrastructure and socio-economic projects, ensuring lasting development and prosperity for the people of Akwa Ibom State.
