Popular Nigerian musician Davido has added fuel to the growing rumors that his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, might soon leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Political Unrest in Osun State
Osun State’s political sphere has been turbulent, especially with many PDP members reportedly defecting in recent times. The party’s weakening influence has put Governor Adeleke under public scrutiny, intensifying suspicions about his next political steps.
Where the Rumors Started
The speculation escalated after Governor Adeleke, along with Davido and Deji Adeleke, visited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at his Lagos residence during the Eid al-Adha celebration. The visit, interpreted by many as more than just a courtesy call, sparked discussions about a possible party switch.
Davido’s Indirect Statement
Despite official denials from Governor Adeleke and the APC about any impending defection, clues emerged from Davido’s upcoming song. In a preview of the track, Davido seems to reference both major parties by mentioning “new broom go sweep better” and “from umbrella to broom,” subtly alluding to the APC (broom) and PDP (umbrella) symbols. While Davido never directly named any party or person, these hints have only amplified the defection buzz.
APC’s Mixed Response
Within the APC, reactions have been cautious. Senator Iyiola Omisore, the party’s former national secretary and ex-deputy governor of Osun, stated on a television program that such a political transition cannot happen via social media or rumor alone. He emphasized that a formal process, involving APC leadership and party elders, would be necessary for any official move.
