Former Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports in Akwa Ibom State, Sir Monday Uko — fondly known as Sir Monty — has honoured a promise made to Otta Farm, a grassroots football supporters’ group known for their passionate support of state-backed football teams.

The pledge was originally made during a Nigeria National League match held at the Uyo Township Stadium last year, where Sir Monty commended the group’s consistent and enthusiastic backing of local clubs. In appreciation, he promised financial support to seven dedicated members to aid their business start-ups or expand existing ventures.

Earlier this week, Sir Monty’s Personal Assistant, Prince Ukeme Ukpong, presented the beneficiaries with cheques on his behalf. During the presentation, Prince Ukpong urged the recipients to make judicious use of the funds to grow sustainable businesses, adding that the gesture reflects both Sir Monty’s and Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to the economic advancement of young people in the state.

He further encouraged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the ARISE Youth Empowerment programmes currently accessible via government digital platforms.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Mr Abraham Okon expressed heartfelt gratitude to Sir Monty, assuring him that the grants would be put to meaningful use. He reaffirmed the group’s continued support for the Umo Eno administration and its youth-focused policies.

This philanthropic gesture not only signals Sir Monty’s appreciation for community engagement in sports but also reflects a broader vision of grassroots economic empowerment and youth inclusion in development initiatives within Akwa Ibom State.
